St. Joseph is eager to play an opponent as the season kicks off.

The Flyers will play Katy Harmony School of Innovation at 6pm Friday at Cowboy Memorial Stadium in Edna.

Following weeks of of practice, first-year St. Joseph head coach Jacob Vasquez is anxious to begin the season.

ƵIƵm excited to be able to finally play a game against someone else,Ƶ Vasquez said. ƵI want to see us play as a team and see how we respond to adversity. I want to see us be disciplined in our approach and our execution.

St. Joseph finished last season at 5-5 and missed the playoffs by virtue of the districtƵs tiebreaking formula.

The Flyers will base out of a multiple set slot-t offense this year. The offense will feature seniors Aiden Aragon at quarterback, and senior Dedric Callis at running back.

Defense has been a point of focus for Vasquez, and he has high expectations for the defensive unit this season.

ƵEven though IƵm the offensive coordinator, our point of emphasis is defense,Ƶ Vasquez said. ƵIƵm trying to hype them up as much as I can as we have to be able to hang our hats on those guys.

ƵI think we will be able to create turnovers and make some key stops,Ƶ he continued.

The Flyers have high hopes going into the season, as they will be competing in a new district compromised of Brownsville St. Joseph, San Antonio Christian, and St. Anthony.

ƵI see us competing for a district championship In six weeks,Ƶ Vasquez said.
