EDNA òòò½ÊÓƵ” Tidehaven head coach Michelle Wagner has no idea if the Tigerettes have ever gotten off to such a successful start again, And, she doesnòòò½ÊÓƵ™t want to know.
Tidehaven overcame a nine-point halftime deficit and captured a 58-57 district win over Edna on Friday night at the Edna gym.
Wagner is only concerned with how Tidehaven performs in District 25-3A play.
òòò½ÊÓƵœWe had a good preseason, the girls are clicking, but really weòòò½ÊÓƵ™re 2-0,òòò½ÊÓƵ she said. òòò½ÊÓƵœTonight was a good one, especially coming out in the second half. We did not have a good first half at all. We kind of looked slow. They definitely learned to play the second half.òòò½ÊÓƵ
òòò½ÊÓƵœThey like to say theyòòò½ÊÓƵ™re a third-quarter team and so far weòòò½ÊÓƵ™ve been able to battle back with that,òòò½ÊÓƵ Wagner said of the Tigerettes, who improved to 18-0 on the season. òòò½ÊÓƵœI would rather not do that, but they have a tendency to do that now and then.òòò½ÊÓƵ
Mary Johnson led Tidehaven with 24 points, but unlike past seasons, she had help. Johnson did not score in the fourth quarter and Mykah Riddick made the decisive shot with 58 seconds remaining.
òòò½ÊÓƵœWeòòò½ÊÓƵ™re still trying to play our roles, but itòòò½ÊÓƵ™s a lot easier to have some backup when Iòòò½ÊÓƵ™m not at my best,òòò½ÊÓƵ Johnson said. òòò½ÊÓƵœWeòòò½ÊÓƵ™re very big role players. We all do what we need to do and play our parts.òòò½ÊÓƵ
Keira Santellana scored 23 points and Shanti Guerra scored 18 for the Cowgirls (13-5, 0-2), who outscored Tidehaven 17-10 in the second quarter and led 37-28 at halftime.
òòò½ÊÓƵœWe talked about it (not turning the ball over) ever since this game was on the schedule,òòò½ÊÓƵ Edna head coach Dustin Durham said. òòò½ÊÓƵœWe knew we had to make sure we took care of the basketball. Unfortunately, we didnòòò½ÊÓƵ™t do that very well. But the girls played hard and it was a good game.òòò½ÊÓƵ
Johnson scored nine points in the third quarter and the Tigerettes tied the game at 48 entering the fourth quarter.
òòò½ÊÓƵœWeòòò½ÊÓƵ™ve been down quite a few games, but you have to play until the end,òòò½ÊÓƵ Johnson said. òòò½ÊÓƵœThereòòò½ÊÓƵ™s no reason to stop when youòòò½ÊÓƵ™re behind.òòò½ÊÓƵ
Guerra made three of four free throws to give Edna a 57-56 lead with 1:09 remaining.
But Riddick, who scored 11 points, got free under the basket and put the Tigerettes ahead for good.
Riddick missed two free throws with 5.78 seconds left, and Edna called timeout after getting the rebound with 3.71 seconds on the clock. But the Cowgirls were unable to get off a final shot.
òòò½ÊÓƵœThe girls know their roles and have accepted their roles, especially after the past few games,òòò½ÊÓƵ Wagner said. òòò½ÊÓƵœTheyòòò½ÊÓƵ™re out there clicking and working and they know what they need. Whether theyòòò½ÊÓƵ™re coming off the bench and playing a few minutes or a lot of minutes, they know what we need from them whether theyòòò½ÊÓƵ™re a scorer, play defense, or get rebounds or stuff like that.òòò½ÊÓƵ
