Dull blades beware: a mobile knife sharpening business is coming to Bozeman.

Every Monday, starting March 31, Dave Russell and his Hollowtop Sharpening trailer will be around town, resurrecting blades of all kinds to their sharper, former selves.

ƵPeople can come bring their knives and go back home and come back in half an hour, 45 minutes or I can deliver them,Ƶ Russell said. ƵThatƵs the plan, every Monday. Weather permitting.Ƶ

A former contractor in Bozeman, Russell started his new venture about two years ago and has been offering his services in the Madison and Gallatin valleys. Based in Harrison, Russell will travel to Ennis, Cardwell or Whitehall and, soon, Bozeman.

ƵI lived in Bozeman for 45 years before moving out to Harrison,Ƶ Russell said, having retired since. ƵI mostly do Ennis and Three Forks but IƵm missing Bozeman so I thought I would try and see how it goes. I can come to somebodyƵs house; they donƵt have to leave, and I can have their cutlery nice and sharp.Ƶ

Russell charges by the inch but will provide a 10% discount for 15 or more items. HeƵll sharpen any collection of chef knives, cleavers, or paring and fillet knives, but will also rework lawn mower blades, shears and those stubborn serrated bread knives.

ƵIƵll do anything, but I donƵt do chainsaws,Ƶ he said, citing that a new chainsaw chain goes for about as much as he would charge.

Kitchen knives go for $1 an inch, hunting knives and pocket knives are $2 an inch, scissors go for $7 and lawnmower blades and pruning shears are $10.

Russell uses a Ken Onion belt sharpening system that provides variable speed belts with different grits to resharpen blades because as the saying goes, Ƶa dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp oneƵ.

ƵItƵs just safer and pleasant, anybody working in the kitchen appreciates a nice piece of cutlery,Ƶ he said, jokingly adding, ƵMy wife is a retired professional cook, so I have to keep her (knives) sharp, or IƵll get in trouble.Ƶ

Russell plans to be in Bozeman every Monday without a set location but says heƵs likely to set up shop in different areas or neighborhoods or come to peopleƵs homes and offices to make it convenient for residents.
