The Victoria Ballet TheatreƵs annual performance of The Nutcracker has become a holiday tradition that remains as timeless as the art of ballet itself. Whether theyƵre making new memories or living their childhood, residents have flocked to the theatre to experience true Christmas magic for 40 years.

While some of the cast and crew in The Nutcracker have been a part of the production for almost 30 years, Caden Thomas will be stepping into the spotlight in his very first production of the Nutcracker.

Having studied musical theatre in college and been in local productions of theatre shows, Thomas is no stranger to the stage. In musical theatre, Thomas tells a story through song whereas in dance, everything is conveyed through the body.

ƵYouƵre telling a story through pantomiming, dance is body-based storytelling,Ƶ Thomas said.

Thomas has big shoes to fill as he steps into the role of Drosselmeyer, ClaraƵs uncle and the magical catalyst behind the show.

ƵHe comes bearing magic and gifts to the Christmas party and presents Clara with the nutcracker doll,Ƶ Thomas said.

Thomas has relied on his dance training to help keep up with the talented dancers of the Victoria Theatre Ballet company. The dancers behind your favorite holiday production spend their days at work and school before logging long hours at the barre and in the studio, perfecting each movement and facial expressions before the curtain rises. On the weekends, the dancers are in the studio in their pink tights and black leotards, sweating despite the winter air.

ƵA lot of people come to see the show and they see how effortlessly these incredible girls make it seem but itƵs not. ItƵs incomprehensible how much hard work they put into making the show look so pretty,Ƶ Thomas said.

Seeing VBTƵs Executive Director Brenda TallyƵs dancers push themselves day-in and day-out has helped Thomas elevate himself.

ƵItƵs all about teamwork. I know I have a team behind me to uplift me,Ƶ Thomas said.

Thomas has enjoyed getting to be a part of this yearƵs Nutcracker performance and looks forward to performing in front of the best audience: His family and friends.

ƵThe Nutcracker is a classic and for-sure way to get into the Christmas spirit,Ƶ Thomas said.

Only time will tell if Thomas becomes one of the performers who returns season after season to participate in Victoria Ballet TheatreƵs annual Nutcracker performance but for now, Thomas is enjoying being back onstage in his hometown.
